What's it all about?

Every year on Christmas Eve, St Peter’s church hold a Crib Service. It is very popular, as we tell the Christmas story and bring the figures of each of the characters, including of course the animals, and put them in our crib scene. Its a great way to engage young and old in the story.

For the past 4 years during December, we have had a Travelling Nativity, which comes from the South American tradition of Posada - recreating the Advent journey of Mary and Joseph as they made their way to Bethlehem for that first Christmas.

Beginning on 1st Dec, a set of knitted nativity figures will travel between homes around the whole village, as each household involved offers them a home for the night. The next day they take the figures to the next people on the list, and so on until the nativity set makes its way back to the church for Christmas Eve.

There will be a box to accompany the figures containing all that is needed to host the event and after a short introduction you can share a cup of tea, and perhaps a biscuit or a mince pie with those bringing the nativity to your home - you in turn will receive this welcome as you take the Travelling Nativity to the next household.

What does it mean?

The Travelling Nativity will literally travel miles around the homes in our community - the symbolic journey through the dark and cold, to be greeted with anticipation in the comfort of warm, welcoming homes. In the pre-Christmas schedule of work, preparation, shopping, cooking, carol concerts and the like, perhaps we think the last thing we need is the intrusion of guests! But we may be surprised that making a little extra effort brings new friendships and an opportunity to just take some ‘time out’ to consider the real meaning and values of Advent.
